Two things that are present in nearly every wedding are stress and alcohol. With all the planning and nerves that lead up to a wedding day, no matter if you’re the bride or the best man, it’s common to pour a drink the night before to ward off any early jitters.
To be certain a nasty hangover doesn’t show up uninvited to the big event, it’s important to tread lightly the night before. Follow these tips to guarantee that you’ll be fresh and ready to dance the wedding night away.
If the bridal party is spending Wedding Eve holed up in a suite at the Hilton where there’s sure to be booze, think ahead to ward off any unwelcome consequences. Eat well during the day. Avoid skimping on meals due to lack of time (a frequent accompaniment of wedding planning). Fattier foods help line the stomach, while healthy carbs help absorb the alcohol.
Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day as well. Alcohol dehydrates the body, so treat your body to a hefty dose of water before you start drinking the good stuff.
An easy way to breed a hangover is by mixing different kinds of alcohol together. Be it beer or liquor or wine, your safest bet is to pick one and stick to it. If you just can’t make up your mind, remember, “liquor before beer, you’re in the clear; beer before liquor makes you sicker.”
Darker liquids, such as red wine and whisky, are more concentrated and therefore more likely to point you in the direction of a hangover. Carbonated beverages should also be avoided, as they push the alcohol to your head, increasing the rate of consumption. After the champagne toast is over, it’s time to consider a different kind of drink.
Once you’ve decided on your drink of choice, know your limits. Believe it or not, no one wants you to have a hangover on the big day. Your body can break down one alcoholic drink per hour, so rethink those late-night plans for a power hour. Pace yourself.
Eating while you drink is a good idea for two reasons: whatever you eat will help absorb the alcohol you’re drinking, and it gives you an excuse to eat! Whether it’s peanuts or cake, every little bite fills your body with something to soak up the alcohol, lessening the chances of a rough morning.
Even more helpful than eating while drinking is hydrating with water. Not only should you hydrate before you grab that first beer, but to be on the safe side, you should drink one glass of water for every alcoholic beverage you ingest.
If you’re drinking liquor, order your drinks on the rocks. As the ice melts, it will dilute your drink, making it weaker and giving you that much more water.

Have I mentioned water? After a night of drinking, the best thing for your body is water. A hangover is essentially dehydration due to alcohol, so stocking up on the wet stuff is an important part of taking care of your body. Drink at least one glass of water before you crawl into bed.
On the night before The Big Day, though, you may want to make it two or three glasses, just to be safe.
A healthy breakfast is key after a fun night out. Eggs, bananas, and fruit juice help replenish some of the vitamins you lose while drinking. And hey—don’t forget to order a side of water!
