How to get rid of dandruff

How to get rid of dandruff

Dandruff can be very persistent, even to the extent that it can make a person lose their confidence. However, with the right products and proper care you can end it once and for all.

The skin on your face and body constantly renews itself. Dead cells shed in almost microscopic particles. The skin on the scalp renews itself also and in a scalp affected with dandruff this process occurs much faster. Instead of lasting for about three weeks, cell renewal occurs every fourteen days, and in the worst cases it occurs once a week.  The result is a greater amount of dead tissue on the surface of the scalp which can be seen with naked eye.

There Are Two Types of Dandruff

Depending on the type of skin on the scalp, dandruff can be divided into dry or oily.

You can recognize dry dandruff if it falls very quickly and can be seen on the shoulders on darker clothes, if there are small, white flakes that can be seen on the hair roots, around the forehead and on the back of the head. This type of dandruff is easily cured or prevented with a suitable treatment.

If dandruff clings to the scalp, if the flakes are bigger and the skin on your scalp itches, then it must be oily dandruff. Avoid scratching and scrubbing the scalp cause that way you could damage your skin and cause an infection. This type of dandruff is much harder to get rid off, it sticks close to the skin thus closing the pores and it can cause hair fall. The only consolation is the fact that it won’t show as much and won’t fall over your shoulders, because of the oil.

What Causes Dandruff?

There are many internal and external factors that can cause dandruff. Here are the few most common:

Hormonal disorders: puberty, a menstrual cycle irregularity and menopausal difficulties can stimulate the appearance of dandruff. Dandruff rarely appears with children, and it usually decreases at an older age.

Stress: The skin on the scalp is also susceptible to everyday stress, as the skin on the rest of your body. If you are tense all the time, it could have a bad effect on the cell renewal and create an environment for the appearance of dandruff. This is also one of the reasons why dandruff “mysteriously” disappears while we are on vacation.

Wrong hair care routine: hair care products that are too aggressive can cause a contraction of the blood vessels. Thus the sebaceous glands produce more sebum and the dandruff increases. On the other hand, if the hair care products are too mild than they don’t get rid of the dead cells effectively and this is also a cause for the appearance of dandruff.

Other: very dry skin, unbalanced diet, dirt, irritation from too many styling products, etc.

How To Get Rid of Dandruff

The best and fastest way to get rid of dandruff is to properly use a combination of anti-dandruff shampoo and special anti-dandruff treatment. Thanks to the active ingredients with antifungal effect, these products heal the scalp, and the salicylic acid stimulates the quick shedding of the gathered dandruff at the roots of the hair.

Shampooing: You shouldn’t wash your hair every day, hoping to remove the upper layer of dandruff by rubbing. This can only be done by special shampoos because, not only do they wash the hair, they also remove the dead cells from the surface of the scalp and get rid of the extra fungus.

Before washing, dampen your hair considerably, in order not to apply too much shampoo. Then rub in the shampoo till it foams, rubbing from the back of the head upwards. Rinse properly and then repeat the procedure, this time leaving the product on your hair from 2 to 5 minutes. Finish off with a throughout rinsing. During shampooing use the opportunity to properly massage the scalp with gentle circular movements of your fingers against the skin, being careful not to scrape it. The most you should wash your hair is three times a week, in order not to irritate the scalp surface.
