A Bewitching Engagement Shoot

A Bewitching Engagement Shoot

Just got engaged? Congratulations! Now it’s time to plan a wild celebration in true Halloween style. Take advantage of the upcoming holiday of Halloween to plan a bewitching engagement photo session so you and your sweetheart will always remember exactly what time of year you made the promise to each other. You did the hard part by asking (and answering) the big question; now it’s time to go batty over capturing your excitement!

Playful Poses

What could be more romantic than your new fiancé protecting you from a zombie invasion? Get a dozen of your friends to dress in green face paint and tattered rags (hey, it’s the least of what you’ll ask of them during your upcoming wedding-planning frenzy) and stand slightly uphill from them, hugging your fiancé as he brandishes a nice, heavy shovel.

Fans of B-movies will adore your playful wedding announcement style. Don’t forget to take turns rescuing each other–you never know what will make the best photo.

Spooky Lighting

Great photos are all about light. Unlike conventional engagement photos, which usually make use of the available sunlight outside or neutral studio lighting, a Halloween-themed shoot can use creative colors for spooky lighting.

Try directing two complementary colors of light, such as purple and yellow or blue and orange, at your faces from opposing sides. That way, the shadows contrast and lend a dramatic, theatrical feel to your photos.

Don’t underestimate the visual power of a nighttime photo shoot. Even though nighttime photography requires more technical skill than daytime shoots, if you choose a photographer with an impressive portfolio of night shots, you will find the result well worth the process. Don’t forget extras like sparklers to give your photos a little more zest.

Festive Costumes

Halloween is a time for breaking out the costumes, so don’t hold back for this photo shoot! From funny hats to full-body getups–and even painting your bodies and faces to enhance your artistic vision–the only limit is your imagination.

While the romantic couples from Beetlejuice, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Corpse Bride are cute themes for a Halloween photo shoot, there’s no reason you have to stick with traditional skeletons-and-witches fare. Embrace the idea of costumes on a more meaningful level by dressing as personifications of the roles you embody in your relationship.

Is one of you more adventurous, always planning camping trips and romantic getaways? Now’s the time to dress like Indiana Jones or Lara Croft. Is one of you especially nurturing? It’s a perfect excuse to dress like an old-fashioned nurse–or a “love doctor.”

If you’ve always wanted to be a princess but you’re not in the mood for the full “ball gown and tiara” bridal look on your actual wedding day, your engagement photos are the perfect place to have your cake and eat it, too. Pile on the petticoats and costume jewelry without fear of anyone pegging you as the “princess type.” Halloween only comes once a year, after all!

Do you have a beloved pet you want to include in your happy memories? Be sure to dress Fluffy for the occasion, too! Your cat may hate you if you try to stuff her into a pair of cupid wings, but you can assure her it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience for you all.

Seasonal Props and Settings

As you get your lighting, poses, and costumes ready, don’t forget the fun symbols that come with Halloween! Use pumpkins (both the giant and the cute mini kind), black and orange candles, scarecrows, black cats, and even fake cobwebs to make your pictures pop.

Don’t wait around in the photography studio, either; take a field trip to venture into corn fields, pumpkin patches, elegant old graveyards, nighttime woods, and anywhere covered in ivy for perfectly spooky photos.

Have fun with your themed photo shoot. Every wedding photographer agrees–the best photos happen when you’re relaxed and having fun. Let yourself focus on the creative energy of preparing the perfect Halloween shoot, and the romance will shine through in your smiles.

Put all thoughts of stress aside. Now is the time to relax and bask in the happiness of your new engagement. You still have a whole year to plan your Halloween wedding!
