What Should the Bride’s Mother Wear to the Wedding?

The bride’s mother is perhaps one of the most significant relatives of the bride, and she typically has to wear a stunning outfit preferably with a matching hat on the big day. But there are several unwritten rules for the bride’s mother regarding which colors are most suitable for her. It is suggested to avoid white or cream, for example, as this may be the color of the bride’s dress.

If you are the mother of the bride you should also refrain from wearing red, as it can be seen as a way of drawing attention to yourself when it’s your daughter who should be getting all the attention. Since your daughter’s wedding is one of the most important events in her life and (hopefully) a once in a lifetime experience, you should make your best possible efforts in order to look good. You can visit a beauty parlor to have a facial done or fix your hair before the special day. When it comes to shopping for the dress, you should take special care.

Before you go wedding shopping, you should follow some simple rules concerning your outfit and accessories. On no account should you buy something which will overshadow the bride, and also make sure to avoid the color white which is mainly reserved for the bride on her wedding day.

Preferably, you should also not buy a black ensemble. This can be misconstrued by others as an indication that you are unhappy with the marriage. In case of a formal wedding or wedding to be conducted at night, however, black may be an appropriate choice provided the bride agrees on that color choice.

You must also not buy a dress in red, as stated earlier, because it tends to be controversial and can add much contrast against the bride who will probably be wearing a white gown. It is ideal to select an outfit in a complementary shade to the bride’s dress. A general rule of thumb is to choose a color which might match the bridesmaids’ dress color, although it does not have to match exactly.

You can select a dress or suit in light blue, lilac or plum if the bridesmaids’ dresses are lavender in color, for example. You can also shop for wedding dresses in neutral colors such as navy or brown.

You should also take care to avoid the fads. Although wearing a neutral colored outfit may not be as fashionable or exciting, it will at least prevent you from becoming a fashion victim for many years to come and may ensure that the dress or suit will look always presentable in photographs.

So even if shocking pink is the latest fad, do not choose a wedding dress in pink as it may go out of fashion in a few years. For lovely women who are shapely there are also plenty of plus size dresses available to choose from, so you’re sure to find one that suits your taste.
